Hodgman backs Stan Siejka Launceston Cycling Classic over four years

  • The Stan Siejka Launceston cycling classic to be guaranteed $100,000 funding over four years under a Hodgman Liberal Government
  • A Hodgman Liberal Government will provide $25,000 a year to support the event
  • Funding will allow the event to develop into a world class race

Leader of the Opposition Will Hodgman said:

“The Launceston Cycling classic, recently renamed the Stan Siejka Launceston Cycling Classic in honour of the late Stan Siejka who was one of the inaugural organisers of the race, has grown in popularity each year it has been held.

“It deserved to receive a firm commitment from Government to ensure that its future was guaranteed.

“Therefore I can today announce that a Hodgman Liberal Government will provide $25,000 per year over four years to ensure its ongoing future.

“This funding will enable the organisers to build an even stronger event in the years to come, ensuring that Launceston remains a key destination for Australia’s cycling elite into the future.”

Shadow Treasurer, and Shadow Sports and Recreation Minister, Peter Gutwein said:

“I know the very positive effects this race has throughout our community through increased participation in the sport of cycling, as well as the economic benefits that flow to the community as a result of nearly 100 cycling competitors drawing usually 10,000 people into the heart of Launceston while the event is underway.

“I am very pleased that the race will have its future underpinned by a Hodgman Liberal Government, who along with the Launceston City Council and the other sponsors who have been with this race since the beginning will ensure that it has a strong future for many years to come.

“For the last three years I have been a member of the organising committee and I know how hard people have worked to make this race a success. While I informed the Chairman recently that this would be my last year on the committee, I hope that this race can continue its progression into the iconic national and international event that this race in future deserves to be.”

NB: The race is currently supported by a range of corporate and individual sponsors as well as the Launceston City Council, who make a significant contribution each year, and the State Government who currently commit around $5000.00 each year.
